Research on the black scallop followed that on the king scallop. Indeed, over the 1973-1975 " spadework » period, it has been demonstrated that the roadsted of Brest was: - an overexploited king scallop deposit; the broodstock not being able to ensure a satisfying renewal of the species. - a black scallop production deposit (hundreds of tonnes). In parallel, the collection trials provided null results for the king scallop but very interesting results for the black scallop (thousands of spats per collector). From 1976 onwards, the spat collecting operations did not focus on king scallop juveniles anymore, but on black scallop.

Activité comparée chez les espèces Crassostrea angulata Lmk et Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, en hiver ArchiMer

L'espèce Crassostrea gigas a été introduite en 1969 à titre d'essai par de nombreux ostréiculteurs du bassin d'Arcachon. La comparaison des vitesses de croissance de cette nouvelle espèce et de l'huître indigène C. angulata est nettement à l'avantage de l'huître japonaise. Cette dernière atteint la taille marchande dans la plupart des cas dès la première année d''immersion dans la baie alors qu'il faut généralement de deux à trois ans pour obtenir le même résultat avec l'huître portugaise.

Activité respiratoire en continu de l'huître Crassostrea gigas : mise au point d'une nouvelle méthodologie ArchiMer

A continuous monitoring system to measure the respiration of Crassostrea gigas has been developped. The metabolic function estimated by oxygen consumption has been monitored during periods of 24 h, without food, at a temperature constant of 15°C. Preliminary results showed that the mean percentage of oyster activities was 50 % with a high variability from 0 to 100 %. The number of activity periods per day (24 h) is function of the oysters with variation between 0 and 7.

Four laboratories are involved in this multidisciplinary study: the Conchological Laboratory of Normandie (LCN), the Invertebrates Physiology Laboratory (LPI), the Université Bretagne Occidentale (LEMAR IHP) and the Conchological Laboratory of Poitou-Charentes (LCPC). The part of the study which is presented here (thematics "Coastal ecology") was produced in collaboration with the LCN. The data on the Bay of Veys was collected by Michel Ropert. Bases génétiques des caractères physiologiques impliqués dans la croissance chez l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) ArchiMer

Growth is a very important trait in the oyster Crassoslrea gigas both from an economical and scientific point of view. Many questions remain unanswerable or are still discussed . From a hatchery-based population, the constancy in time of growth performances From larval to adult stage was studied. The influence of physiological parameters (energy acquisit ion and expenditure) and parentage on growth was estimated. ln the literature, the relationship between larval growth and post-Iarval growth is debated . Our study shows that the larval growth is positively correlated with the post-Iarval growth. This result validates the hatchery practices consisting in culling the small larvae. The growth performances are stable over the time and show no compensation....

En septembre 1984, MM. HERAL et DESLOUS-PAOLI organisèrent à La Tremblade, une "réunion méthodologie expérimentale mollusques". Cette rencontre faisait suite à un bref état qui s'était engagé au Congrès de Montpellier sur les "Bases biologiques de l'Aquaculture", où il était apparu que la terminologie et la méthodologie concernant le métabolisme des bivalves devaient être clarifiées. 2001 shows how important the "R" and "S" biological families are for experimentation as well as the need to "preserve" these families from mortality during the first year. The "experimental nursing" conditions do not allow the conservation of dozens of families with many members for 6 to 8 months. Precocious characterisation at around 4-5 months enables a first selection of the biological material, as well as a first answer to the "in lab" genetical selection of the families. After the first results in 2001 (Céline de Ambroggi, LCPC, L. La mise sur le marché de coquillages marins vivants nécessite dans la majorité des cas un stockage en bassin avant expédition. Cette opération a plusieurs buts : - les débarrasser de la vase ou du sable qu'ils ont pu accumuler dans leur cavité palléale, sur les zones où ils vivaient, - favoriser l'élimination de germes éventuels (dont certains sont pathogènes pour l'homme) par le biais de l'activité de filtration des coquillages eux-mêmes, - permettre l'activité respiratoire de ces coquillages avant une période d'émersion plus ou moins longue (conditionnement, transport, mise en vente). Since its introduction to French coasts in the 1970s, Crassostrea gigas completes its reproductive cycle—i.e. regular annual recruitment and establishment of natural populations—in only two sectors (Charentes coast and Arcachon Bay). In other areas of Pacific oyster production (Normandy, Brittany, Vendée, Mediterranean), complete gametogenesis may occur, resulting in spawning events and even recruitment in favourable temperatures. Temperature seems to be the main limiting factor for in situ reproduction. Growth and reproduction occur simultaneously. Dynamique des populations bactériennes au cours de deux productions expérimentales de phytoplancton marin naturel ArchiMer

Quantitative and qualitative variations of the hetero­trophic bacterial population, during two experimental induced phytoplanktonic blooms are described. When the phytoplanktonic population deceases, the bacte­rial population exhibits a significant increase. The spring microflore is quite different from the fall ones. Microbiological, physiological and biochemical fluctuations indicate qualitative fluctuations. Bacterial strains are identified as "bacterial profiles".

Eléments d'écophysiologie d'huîtres Crassostrea gigas issues du bassin de Marennes-Oléron ArchiMer

Le bassin de Marennes-Oléron est le premier site ostréicole européen. Depuis 1988 des mortalités chroniques apparaissent sur les élevages conchylicoles. En 1996, un programme de suivi de mortalité et des paramètres environnementaux a été développé. Les différentes conclusions retenues au cours des années antérieures font état de brusques variations de température suspectées dans l'apparition de ces mortalités. Une approche écophysiologique des huîtres par l'intermédiaire de la mesure de respiration a permis de déterminer l'effet significatif d'un stress thermique (∆T=28°C). La maturité sexuelle apparaît également comme un facteur prépondérant dans la demande métabolique. A l'issue de cette étude, il apparaît que les huîtres matures et de surcroît stressées...

Essais d'amélioration de la qualité des huîtres creuses, Crassostrea gigas, en milieu naturel (claires) ArchiMer

Depuis l'extension de la culture de Crassostrea gigas, la qualité de ces huîtres creuses apparaît très variable au moment de leur commercialisation en fin d'année. En vue d'essayer d'améliorer la qualité de ces bivalves, nous nous sommes efforcés de comparer simultanément l'influence de différents apports nutritifs sur des huîtres provenant d'un lot homogène, mises à l'affinage en claires : bassins creusés dans des terrains plats et argileux, dont l'alimentation en eau de mer se fait à certains coefficients de marée. Les anciens marais-salants de la région de Marennes-Oléron, aujourd'hui presque tous désaffectés, ont été pour la plupart transformés en claires à huîtres

Etude bibliographique de quelques espèces planctoniques et benthiques littorales de la Manche - Volume 1 - Espèces phytoplanctoniques ArchiMer

This catalogue deals mainly with common phytoplanktonic species found in the Channel. It is part of a bibliographical survey on pelagos and benthos. The main idea was to gather the largest possible amount of data on the eco-physiology of each species. To do so, studies were conducted in the main marine region where the species had been found and analysed. We focused on several reference ecological studies conducted in the coastal Channel, on the E.D.F. sites, by the C.N.E.X.O., the I.S.T.P.M. and some university laboratories. A great attention was also paid to the studies on seasonal cycles carried out in laboratories in Plymouth, Helgoland and in the Irish zones. (unverified OCR)

Etude comparée de la croissance de Crassostrea gigas Thunberg dans trois rivières du Morbihan ArchiMer

Breeding Crassostrea gigas was conducted in three rivers of Morbihan (Brittany France). During one year, every four months, their increasement was examined. In one of these rivers, oysters showed, however their age and their origin, an abnormal increasement. Shells were very thick, with many chambers. At the opposite, in the two others rivers, oysters did not show that disordered state. Shells were sound and their linear increasement was harmonious

The bacteria of the Vibrio genus are one of the most abundant groups in the aquatic ecosystems. Two species of vibrios, Vibrio splendidus and V. Aestuarianus, have been associated, in some cases, to mortality in flat oyster Crassostrea gigas farms, most of the time during the summer period. This doctoral thesis studies the Vibrio-host interaction and their modulations according to the host's pathogenic virulence and its genetic, physiologic and immunitary parameters. These factors will be characterised by in vitro and in vivo approaches (experimental infection). Etude des mortalités d'huîtres sur le bancs ostréicoles de Ronce Perquis (Bassin de Marennes-Oléron) ArchiMer

In order to better understand the chronic summer mortality striking the Marennes Oléron Bay since 1988, a research program has been developed since 1994 in association with the professional sector. This study comprises the monitoring, from March to October 1997, of a homogeneous oyster population cultivated on-bottom and off-bottom on 15 working sites. One of these sites is equipped with a multiparameter probe and a valvometer. Measures are taken on an on-going basis on the working site.
